Open windows!

Oh how the kitties love them! I love this time of year when everything is waking up and coming to life again. I saw my first robin of the season just yesterday and was able to open the windows for the first time Friday evening for a little while. My kitties just love to press their noses up against the screen and smell all the outside smells. It won't be long before the grass is green and the trees begin to bud and my tulips come up. Can't wait! Happy spring to all!

What do you think of these?

This is my latest hair brained idea....
I call them "Shoe-bead-oos" they are beads for shoelaces on kids shoes (like down by the toe).
Are they completely retarded or are they fun? Should I put them on Etsy?

Ok, I really need to get to work but...

just saw this Etsy shop and I absolutely love them! Just wanted to share!

Been busy this weekend...

I finished the bright little pillowcase dress and got it listed over at Etsy. I also got something else almost done for the Etsy shop, too. I just need to make the bloomers to go with it. It is a little reversible A line sundress. It is made in shades of turquoise and ivory. I am in LOVE with this fabric. :)

I have been thinking.... I have 5 birthdays looming ahead of me in the next couple of months. I need to get my hiney in gear and get some things done for them! First is my niece Alexa who will be 6 in April. I know I swore off making things for her because it seems she doesn't wear them that much, maybe it is just because I don't see her that much. Maybe she does wear them? I have an idea of something for her, though that I think would be really cute. I am thinking of a pillowcase top in a dog fabric as she is nuts about dogs. Then I am thinking a pair of pull on pants in a light chambray cuffed up with little button tabs made with the dog fabric to hold up the cuffs. I know she doesn't really wear dresses, but maybe she would wear something like this? I am thinking something similar for the next birthday, too. My niece Mady who will be 3 in May. I'd use a different fabric for her, though. Maybe a floral calico or something. Then there are my two older nieces, Kayla, who will be 19 in July and Allison, who will be 16 in May. I am thinking maybe purses for them? I need to find a cute, easy, cheap pattern for them. Then I plan on doing a quilt for my sister whose birhtday is in June. I really should also get the yellow and blue quilt done, too. The baby that that is for is due in May, too. That is just a matter of sandwiching, quilting and binding. I might just wind up giving Kayla and Alli money if I run out of time. LOL! It is a good thing that the other May birthday is my nephew who will also be 16 (Jason's brother's son Andrew, and my sister's daughter, Allison are one day apart in age!). Andy doesn't require handmades, a donation to the car fund is all he asks! LOL. The other niece, Megan doesn't have her birthday until September, so that is a little breather! I think I'm going to have a busy couple of months!

I guess I'd better get busy!

One determined young man!

You may or may have noticed in my favorite blogs to the left side of the page that there is one that seems oddly out of place. I had meant to post about it earlier, but just never did for whatever reason.

The one at the bottom of the list is called "Ride Ataxia" and it is the blog of a young man on a tricycle ride from southern California to Memphis, TN. When he gets to Memphis, he will be attending a meeting of the National Ataxia Research Alliance (NARA).

What makes this ride amazing is that this young man is affected by a disease called Friedreich's Ataxia. FA, as it is more commonly referred to, is an inherited genetic disease for which there is no real treatment or cure. It is very rare as only 1 out of an approximated 100,000 people have it. This is a slowly progressing disease in which the cells of the body lack a protien which helps the transportation of iron out of the cells. Over time there becomes nerve damage and the person begins to lose their ability to balance and coordinate movement. Most are diagnosed as children between the ages of 5 and 13. Many are wheelchair bound by the time they are out of high school. It can also affect the heart muscle and cause it to become weak. Most people with FA don't live to see 40. This young man's ride is to help raise awareness of the disease, and also to raise funds for research. Research in this field is more difficult because of a few reasons. First the genetic code that causes the disease was only found about 15 years (thanks to the Human Genome Project). Also, the more rare the disease, the little money there is for research. People simply don't know the disease exists.

So why am I posting about this? Is it simply an inspirational story to make people feel good? No, the reason that I am posting this is because it is one of my missions in life to raise awareness about this disease, too. Why? Because my niece Allison also has this disease. Allison will be 16 in May. She was diagnosed at the age of 9 after the doctor thought her heart "sounded funny" during a routine school physical. After further testing, FA was the diagnosis. We were devastated. I decided in those first few days that there was a difference between being "reactive" and being "proactive" and that to be of any help to Alli, I needed to be "proactive". That to me is the difference between being upset and depressed and feeling helpless and doing what I can to help raise awareness and, when I can, to help fund research. So this became one of my life goals, to always do what I can in this area. Not only because I love my niece, but because these kids deserve a cure just as much as those with more commonly recognized diseases. That said, you may see me post from time to time on this subject.

Allison is doing well for now. She does require the use of a wheelchair at school and when she is going to be out for extended periods of time. This is partially due to a loss of balance and coordination and partially due to her weakened heart. She gets tired very easily. My sister and her family moved into a different house about a year ago so that Alli no longer had to deal with stairs on a daily basis. They were becoming a little too dangerous for her. She also cannot be left alone in case she should suddenly go into cardiac arrest (which could happen at any time). Alli doesn't talk much about the FA, I think she just wants to live her life each day and take things as they come. I wish I had a more recent picture of Alli to post, but my sister doesn't have a digital camera, so therefore I don't get a whole heck of a lot of pictures with the girls, but here is an old one of her and my husband playing checkers a couple of years ago.

One sold!

The little strawberry dress sold yesterday! I have some really bright floral with butterflies fabric that I am working on another dress from right now. I'll post that one when I get it done. I had three yards of this fabric and it was so bright that I had no idea what to make from it, but I think this will be perfect. My sister gave me the fabric years ago. She had bought it to make sundresses for her girls when they were young and never got them done. The girls are now almost 16 and almost 19, so you can imagine how long I have had this fabric in my stash! Probably 8 years or so. Gotta love using up all those free stash fabrics and making a little cash off of them!

Etsy....

My Etsy shop is up and running! Now I just need to boost the inventory a bit! LOL http://www.themerrychurchmouse.etsy.com. Hopefully this will be a good avenue for me. My website has not been the greatest way of promoting my sewing, I get pretty limited traffic and it is sooo expensive to get things boosted with the search engines.

On the homefront... things are pretty quiet. I have a wonderful bunch of daffodils in my kitchen window. The bank that I work for purchases them every year from the American Cancer Society. They buy enough for every employee to have a bunch. Have I mentioned that I work for some really wonderful people?

And "the booga" (aka Aeris) is as naughty as ever. Here is her newest favorite spot in the house.

But.... how can you stay mad at this sweet face?

Ok, back to sewing....

I had to giggle when I saw this

This is the same pattern that I am using for the pink chrochet blanket. Remember? The oddly triangular one?
I found this one on Etsy listed for $35.00. I'll have to keep my eye on it and see if it sells.

Sorry....

I've not been blogging much this week. I have been busy with some projects. I want to set up an Etsy shop, so I am making some of the pillowcase dresses out of fabric from my stash. I also want to try my hand at some little pinafore style sundresses. They are similar to the pillowcase dresses, but a little different. I even bought a couple of the stamped embroidery pillowcases.
Here are the ones I bought to make dresses out of.

I am currently working on the top one. Hopefully I'll get them done fairly quickly.
I have some other ideas, too, but I'll get to those later. Seems the unfinished projects list is getting longer......Oh well...
